Ammunition Eligibility Check Fee Increase

Starting July 1, 2025, the California Department of Justice is increasing the fees for certain ammunition background checks. If you’re purchasing ammo using a Standard Ammunition Eligibility Check (AFS Match) or if you hold a Certificate of Eligibility (COE), you’ll now see a $5.00 fee per transaction—up from the previous amount. This fee is charged by the state and is non-refundable.

There is no change to the Basic Ammunition Eligibility Check (BAEC), which remains at $19.00. Most customers who are in the AFS system and have previously purchased a firearm from a licensed dealer in California should continue to qualify for the $5.00 SAEC option.

We’ll continue to process your ammo background checks as efficiently as possible and will always work to keep you informed of any state-imposed changes that affect your purchase.
