Description

Ammunition Transfers

Ursa Tactical is a California-based online gun store that offers an ammunition transfer service for customers purchasing ammunition from other dealers or online retailers. In accordance with California state law, all ammunition transfers must be conducted through an FFL or a licensed ammunition vendor.

Under California Penal Code Section 30312, all ammunition shipments must be sent directly to an FFL or a licensed ammunition vendor.

Ursa Tactical, as a licensed vendor, is authorized to receive and transfer ammunition to customers following a successful eligibility check.

What to know

General Requirements

  • Age: Customers must be at least 21 years old to purchase handgun ammunition and 18 years old for rifle and shotgun ammunition.
  • Citizenship/Visa: U.S. citizenship or legal residency with a valid visa is required.
  • Residency: Proof of California residency is mandatory.
  • Identification: A valid California driver’s license or ID card is required. A REAL ID is highly recommended. To verify if you have a REAL ID, look for a gold bear and star in the upper right corner of your ID.
  • AFS Database: Customers must be listed in the California Department of Justice’s Automated Firearms System (AFS). A person typically becomes listed in the AFS by purchasing a firearm in California or registering a firearm with the California DOJ.
How it works

Process Overview

  1. Online Purchase: Before completing their ammunition purchase, customers should ensure the ammunition is not prohibited in California. Please see the section below for assistance on determining whether the ammunition is prohibited in California. Customers should also be aware that California requires an eligibility check to be conducted before ammunition can be transferred to them.
  2. Transfer Request: Customers are urged to register on the Ursa Tactical website and complete an ammunition transfer request form before the ammunition arrives. This helps us prepare for the transfer and expedite the process.
  3. Receiving the Ammunition: Once we receive the ammunition, we will contact the customer to come in for the eligibility check and pick up their ammunition. Typically this happens at the same time.
  4. Eligibility Check: There are two types of eligibility checks in California:
    • Standard Eligibility Check: For customers who are in the AFS database, this check involves matching the customer’s ID with their AFS record. The current state fee for this is $1 and typically takes less than a minute to process.
    • Basic Eligibility Check: For customers not in the AFS database, this check involves a more thorough review, including a background check, and may take several days. The state fee for this check is currently $19.
  1. Final Pickup: After a successful eligibility check, the customer can pick up their ammunition at Ursa Tactical.

California's Ammunition Laws

To assist our customers in complying with California’s ammunition laws, we provide the following high level reference information.  This is by no means comprehensive.  Please refer to the DOJ’s website and/or consult with your attorney to determine the legal status of the ammunition you are purchasing.

In California, certain types of ammunition are restricted or illegal, including:

  1. Armor-Piercing Ammunition: Ammunition designed to penetrate metal or armor is prohibited.
  2. Incendiary Ammunition: Ammunition that is designed to ignite or set fire to the target is prohibited.
  3. Tracer Ammunition: Ammunition that contains a pyrotechnic charge to leave a visible trail is restricted for civilian use.
  4. Flechette Ammunition: Ammunition containing dart-like projectiles is prohibited.
  5. Exploding Ammunition: Ammunition designed to explode upon impact is prohibited.
